Gerard Manley Hopkins SJ (28 July – 8 June ) was an English poet and Jesuit priest, whose posthumous fame established him among the leading Victorian manipulation of prosody – particularly his concept of sprung rhythm – established him as an innovative writer of verse, as did his technique of praising God through vivid use of imagery and mater: Heythrop College, London, Balliol College.

Gerard Manley Hopkins is considered to be one of the greatest poets of the Victorian era. However, because his style was so radically different from that of his contemporaries, his best poems were not accepted for publication during his lifetime, and his achievement was not fully recognized until after World War I.
